Labor Day Weekend With Kids

Events No Comments »

Here are some fun things to do with your family for labor day or any other day in Reston.

Reston Zoo: Check out some of the animals at this nearby zoo. It’s open until 6pm with last admission at 5pm until September 3rd.

Movies: How about a family movie night after the BBQ? Each person can pick a movie, and have some popcorn.

Jobs: Labor Day should be about forgetting your job, but why not talk to your kids about work? Get a book with many jobs, and tell your kids what they do. And ask what they want to be.

Museums: You don’t have to visit DC to find museums. Reston has some, one is the Reston Historic Museum at Lake Anne. You can also visit the art gallery at Lake Anne, on the ground floor of the Heron House.

If you’re like me Labor Day is probably going to be your last outdoor cooking thing of the year. So for no other reason besides sentimental value I’ve chosen this picture. Well maybe more than that because the lomofied colors really help with the mood.

Architecture Firm in Reston Wins Fairfax County Award

Art, Awards, News No Comments »

Reston based LeMay Erickson Architects took two Fairfax County Exceptional Design Awards, both for church design. Their merit award was for the expansion of Vienna Presbyterian church, in downtown Vienna. The firm expanded the building to 55,000 square feet, upgraded the sanctuary to sit 1000 people, and added more classrooms and administration office space.

They also took an award for their expansion work on Clifton Presbyterian Church, a historical building. Without altering the building structurally LeMay Erickson Architects added 30 seats to the sanctuary They also more than doubled square footage with an addition of a fellowship hall, kitchen, and classrooms.

The Fairfax County Exceptional Design Awards contain five categories. The awards are designed to “Recognize achievement in the total design of a building and site and to create an awareness of outstanding planning and design projects among design professionals and the general public.” The awards are sponsored by the Department of Planning and Zoning.

The colors make this photo intriguing and unique. It seems to show sunset at midday. Maybe it’s a message about the change at Reston Town Center, if so it’s further enhanced by the presence of that crane.

Weather for Thursday, August 30th: Mostly sunny, with a high near 87. Calm wind becoming east around 6 mph.

Reston Runner Advances to Finals in International Competition

Sports No Comments »

Reston resident Allan Webb, who we previously blogged about is at another competition today. Today Webb will be competing in the 1500 meters at the IAAF world championship in Japan. Even though Webb beat the world record for that run last week, he barely qualified to make it the IAAF finals. As reported by the Washington Times, Webb said “I wasn’t aggressive enough at the start” he later added, “It almost cost me a spot in the final.”

Update

Webb came in 8th place at the Osaka competition but, America still won. Keyan born Bernard Lagat won the competition, bringing America it’s first win in the 1500 meter since 1908.

Does Reston Need to be Incorporated?

Opinion, Politics 1 Comment »

I use to support Reston becoming a town to further define it’s since of place. But then other pros and cons crossed my mind.

Many of the large companies headquarters in Reston currently do not contribute to any road maintenance, because they are not taxed. As a town Reston could tax them. We could also get rid of the autocratic Reston Association, although that would prove difficult as the founding charter for the organization prohibits them from selling or donating their land. Lastly it would create a since of place and make sure Reston residents didn’t get cheated by things such as the Small District 5 boundary issue.

But on the other hand I wonder how much a town council and mayor would continue Reston’s goals. For instance Reston was supposed to have a mix of housing prices, which it does, but would a council of an affluent town such as Reston block future affordable housing? Would they continue to keep Reston growing, and not bow to the wishes of every NIMBY? What would taxes/services be like?

Of course if Robert Simon were mayor then perhaps some aspects of Reston that have never been fully realized would be implemented.
