The ongoing renovation at South Lakes has continued progressing nicely. Much of the construction on student grounds will be completed by September 4th, the day school starts. Some areas such as the gym and new offices for the administration will not be completed until December.
Many environmental issues present at the then modern classrooms of South Lakes will have been corrected. Better lighting, larger class rooms, and new safety systems have been part of the $50 million renovation. Two years ago Fairfax County voters approved school bonds which paid for the upgrades.

I found the contrast between light and dark to be intriguing. The off centered composition also resonated with me.

Il Fornaio opens it’s first East Coast restaurant at the Reston Town Center Monday. Il Fornaio started as a cooking school in Lombardia, Italy, and later expanded to America.
Il Fornaio serves primarily Northern Italian cuisine, and has a list of 60+ wines. Several of the wines are unique to it’s Reston, Virginia location, as they believe in selling a few local wines. Il Fornaio’s chef, Claudio Zorloni and managing partner, David Carteni both come from Italy and have extensive experience.
Average menu prices are $16, lunch, and $30 dinner. The restaurant seats about 240 people, and is open from 11am to 11pm Monday-Thursday, and open until midnight on Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours are 10am to 11pm. It’s opening day is August 27th, and is located in the Midtown residential building.

I’m not sure what makes this photo seem great. The beautiful background? The in your face pose? The colors? Whatever makes it wonderful, has been used in the perfect balance.

Reston resident Allan Webb broke another record, this time it had been a record held for 25 years in the mile run. He completed it in 3 minutes 46.91 seconds, breaking Steve Scotts previous record. This was not Allan Webb’s first record breaker, while attending South Lakes he broke a 36 year old record, for the high school mile run. For his first record breaking run it was in a crowed stadium. This time it was only in front of a few hundred people, seated in plastic seats.
This recent victory seems to further propel South Lakes return to sports victories. But even better it seems to show a resurgence in American running supremacy.

Fairfax County wants to balance population disparities in it’s schools by realigning its boundaries. One of it’s main ideas is getting rid of the Madison High School island, which sits in the middle of the South Lakes district. South Lakes currently has 800 open seats (after renovations) and when compared to other bordering high schools has more lower income students. According to the Reston Connection, many non-Reston residents don’t want the boundaries realigned, as they sight lower test scores, and more violent incidents. The county believes more balanced demographics would correct those issues.
To the right are the current school boundaries, with South Lakes in pink, and the Madison island in light purple.
