At around 3:30am police fired on a man at a traffic stop, near Sunrise Valley Drive and Copper Mine Road. Officers responded to a report of a single car accident. Fairfax County police are saying the man pulled a handgun, and pointed it at police during the incident. It has not been confirmed if the man shot at the police, or if the police took preemptive action.
The officers where put on administrative leave, as is standard procedure in such incidents. Criminal and administrative investigations are proceeding, and criminal charges are pending.
The Washington Post is reporting the man shot was medevaced to the Inova Fairfax hospital. Another officer received minor injuries, but is fine. No details where released on who fired, or how many shots there where.
