The Reston Community Center invites everyone to come and honor the sacrifice of Dr Martin Luther King. Events start on Janurary 19th with a concert, and continue on the 20th with another free concert.

On January 21st a commemorative march is planned to start at the Southgate Center, and terminates at the Hunter Woods RCC location.

Schedule of Events:
Saturday, January 19, 6:00pm - 8:00pm: RCC Hunters Woods

Reston Community Orchestra, conducted byMaestro Dingwall Fleary. MetroSingers and encore performances by Reston’s own, Beverly Cosham, Song Stylist, and Ellyn Lomak Crawford, Soprano.

Sunday, January 20, 4:00pm: Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation

Community Concert sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 21, 7:30am: Southgate Community Center
Commemorative march, shuttles will be provided back to the Southgate location.

Reston Town Center Marks Start of Christmas Season

On Black Friday the Reston Town Center will be holding a series of family events to mark the start of the shopping season.

Race for the Kids: 7:30am
Alan Webb, U.S. record holder for the fastest mile and South Lakes graduate, will be in a race for children. Kids, toddlers, and teens can participate. Register at www.neediestkids.org

Reston Holiday Parade: 11am

This Thanksgiving you can celebrate Virginia’s 400th anniversary. A parade with Macy’s style balloons, dance, music, and community groups will particpate in this parade. Also present will be Mr and Mrs Claus in a horse-drawn carriage. From 12:30 to 4:30 you can visit Santa.

Holiday Tree Lighting & Sing Along: 6pm
Watch Santa and Mrs. Claus light up the Reston Town Center and the holiday tree, then sing with the Reston Chorale and brass quintet.

Horse Drawn Carriage Rides: 6:30 – 10pm

$5 per person, children 5 and under ride free. All proceeds benefit Volunteer Fairfax!

USGS To Hold Open House

150px-usgs-headquarters.jpegThis Saturday, the United States Geological Survey will hold it’s (sometimes) yearly open house. The open house highlights the responsibilities of the Survey, such as earthquake monitoring, and mapping.

This years open house has over 80 exhibits, highlighting subjects such as hurricanes, water pollution, and satellite imaging. Scientists will be on hand to explain their exhibits. The USGS is over 128 years old and oversees biology, geography, geology, and hydrology work. It was founded to chart the western territories of the United States.

The open house is open from 10am-5pm on Saturday, November 3rd. From the Reston Town center, take Reston Parkway towards South Lakes Drive. Make a right on South Lakes. Continue past Sanibel Dr, and you’ll arrive at the USGS headquarters. There is ample weekend parking.

GRACE Opens Interactive Art Exhibit

1449414136_807634a46e_m.jpgFirst it was newspapers using citizen journalists, now the Greater Reston Arts Center wants gallery visitors to contribute art pieces. Springfield artist Foon Sham will be presenting Flow: The Landscape of Migration, based on the basic Chinese elements, Fire, Water, Earth, Metal, and Wood.

Today the gallery at Reston Town Center opens for groups and visitors to take part of the exhibit. The Reston Connection was at GRACE on Monday and chatted with Foon:

“What shape it takes, I don’t know. It depends on you,” said Sham while installing his mountains on the red floor of the GRACE space on Monday afternoon, Sept. 24. “I’m looking forward to see what happens,” he said.

He will be coming back once a week to examine the constantly changing exhibit. He reserves the right to move some elements around, and “Hopes the red floor will be covered.”

Rudy Giuliani To Visit Town Center

The Northern Virginia Technology Council will be hosting Rudolph Giuliani on the morning of Friday, September 21st. NVTC has hosted a series of presidential candidates making presentations. The event is geared to technology company executives but is open to the general public.

The program is a breakfast to be held at the Hyatt Regency at the Reston Town Center. Registration and networking is 7:00-7:45am, with the program at 8:00-9:15am. Cost for non-members is $105. You can visit the NVTC website for more information.

1950s Disney Art on Display at ArtInsights

Animation gallery ArtInsights in the Reston Town Center will be hosting a new exhibit on Disney animated art from the 1950s. The display opens on Tuesday September 3rd, and is open until October 2nd. Items on display include Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and Tramp, and more.

ArtInsights is run by Michael Barry and Leslie Combemale who both have extensive experience in art. Collectors can buy art, or the casual viewer can see pieces from Disney, Warner Brothers, and other studios. They specialize in pre 1960s animation art. ArtInsights is located at 11921 Freedom Drive.

Reston Multicultural Festival In It’s 7th Year

The Reston Multicultural festival will have it’s seventh year this Saturday (9/8). This fesitival celebrates the abundace of clutures found in Reston, and this years them is “Discover the World in Reston.”

As usual the festival will feature international music, food, and activities. Some of the performances include G.T.E.V. a music/dance troupe from the Bavarian region of Germany. The Silver Light Senior Association will also be performing an ancient Chinese opera. Music performances from African and South American groups will also be present.

This years Multicultural fesitival will be on Saturday September 8th, rain or shine, at Lake Anne. Bring your kids, and dress to represent your culture. The festival is sponsored by the Reston Community Center.
